Water Softener Salt: Pellets or Crystals for Your Galion Home?

Pellets or crystals? Both can be suitable water-softener salts, but the best choice starts with your softener’s instructions. Here’s how to compare the bags, avoid common refill mistakes and make your next salt run a little simpler.

Water Softener Salt: Pellets or Crystals for Your Galion Home?

Start With Your Softener’s Instructions

When you’re shopping for water-softener salt in Galion, the bag color or lowest price should not be your only guide. Start with your unit’s model number and owner’s manual. Check which salt forms and purity levels it accepts, along with any restrictions on additives.

Morton’s current softener guidance lists both solar crystals and pellets among its recommended choices and calls for salt labeled for water-softener use with at least 99% purity. That is useful guidance for its equipment, not a replacement for another manufacturer’s directions. Morton’s salt-type guide

What Is the Difference Between Pellets and Crystals?

Pellets are small salt particles compressed into a consistent shape. Solar crystals form as salt water evaporates, leaving irregular crystals. Either can be a sensible choice when approved for your equipment.

Purity matters as well as shape. Whirlpool’s guidance favors high-purity evaporated pellets because they leave less residue and can reduce maintenance. That does not make every pellet product identical or mean every crystal product is unsuitable. Compare the actual bag label and your manual rather than assuming a higher price automatically means a better fit. Whirlpool’s salt guidance

Use Salt Made for Water Softeners

Choose a bag that clearly identifies water softening as its intended use. Do not substitute driveway ice melt, ordinary rock salt or table salt simply because they contain salt. Morton advises against those products in its softeners because impurities or the wrong form can create operating and maintenance problems.

Specialty products also deserve a second look. An iron-control formula should address a known need and be compatible with your equipment. Check the product directions and your softener’s requirements before changing to an additive-containing formula.

Can You Switch or Mix Pellets and Crystals?

Check your equipment’s guidance before topping one shape with another. Morton Salt’s product FAQ says its water-softening products are compatible, while Morton’s softener support recommends staying with one shape to reduce bridging risk. Product compatibility and a particular machine’s maintenance instructions are different questions.

If you want to switch, follow your softener manufacturer’s procedure rather than improvising a tank-cleaning or refill method. Keep the old bag label or take a picture so you can identify what is already in the tank. Morton’s refill instructions · Morton Salt’s product FAQ

A Full-Looking Tank May Still Need Attention

A salt bridge is a hardened crust with an empty space underneath. That separation can prevent salt from reaching the water properly, even when the tank appears to contain plenty of salt.

Follow your manual’s salt-level and inspection schedule instead of filling to the lid automatically. If salt has hardened, use the manufacturer’s bridge-removal instructions. Simply adding another bag does not fix the empty space beneath a bridge. Morton’s salt-bridge guidance

Make Your Next Salt Run Easier

Before shopping, take a photo of your softener’s model label and the salt you currently use. Check the recommended type, compare equal bag weights and choose a bag you can safely handle. A useful comparison is price per pound, not just the price printed on the shelf.

Browse Liberty’s softener-salt selection, then check current availability before making a special trip. Liberty Farm, Home & Garden is at 222 S. Liberty St. in Galion. Bring your model information and bag photo along when comparing the options.
